Oversupply (Hyperlactation)

Because sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.

When Abundance Becomes a Challenge

Because sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.
Oversupply also called hyperlactation is often described as a “great problem to have.” People may focus on a full freezer and not worrying about having enough milk.

But parents who experience oversupply know that it can be uncomfortable, painful, and difficult to manage, and it can increase the risk of plugged ducts and mastitis.

What Oversupply Can Look Like

Oversupply may show up as:

  • Breast fullness or discomfort between normal feeding times
  • Producing more milk each day than your baby needs

Babies may also show signs, including:

  • Choking or gagging at the breast
  • Pulling off or becoming fussy during feeds
  • Loose, watery, or frequent stools

Why Oversupply Deserves Support

Oversupply is not just about volume—it affects how feeding feels for both parent and baby. When left unaddressed, it can contribute to ongoing discomfort, feeding frustration, and recurrent breast inflammation.

Thoughtful care can make feeding more comfortable without undermining breastfeeding goals.

How FLOW Helps

At FLOW, we take a medical history and a breastfeeding history for both you and your baby. Oversupply has many possible contributors, and management should be individualized.

If oversupply is present, we work together to:
Understand the underlying cause
Reduce discomfort and associated feeding challenges
Lower the risk of plugged ducts and mastitis
Support feeding in a way that aligns with your goals
There are multiple treatment options, and care is tailored to help you and your baby feed more comfortably.

A Reassuring Takeaway

Having a lot of milk doesn’t mean you should have to suffer through feeding.
With the right support, oversupply can often be managed in a way that protects both breastfeeding and breast health.
